WorldSkills London 2011 offers spectacular learning opportunity for interns at Grass Roots

26th September, 2011

Emma Beaumont and Sasha Young will be gaining world-class experience working as interns on one of the biggest events to touch down in London ahead of the 2012 Olympics.

The dynamic duo will be working with marketing and events company Grass Roots on the opening and closing ceremonies for WorldSkills London 2011 in October.

WorldSkills London 2011 is the world’s largest, international skills Competition where young people from across the globe compete to become the best of the best. Over 150,000 visitors are expected to attend the event from 5-8 October at ExCeL London.

Grass Roots have been contracted to provide the creative and technical solution for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at The O2. Over 8,000 guests from across the world will attend each event. The ceremonies will be two spectacular shows, showcasing some of the UK’s most talented young performers and celebrating the communities coming together from around the world to take part in WorldSkills London 2011.

Emma is studying Events Management at Leeds Metropolitan University and says that WorldSkills is a fantastic event to get involved in. ‘As well as furthering my understanding of the industry, I’m working with interesting people to create an event to remember,’ she says.

‘I’ll be working on everything from briefing volunteers and managing accommodation for performers to transport, catering and managing the performers backstage.’

Sasha is currently studying Event Management at Southampton Solent University and is looking forward to working on the event.  ‘Being part of such a big event offers a great opportunity to develop my skills and further my knowledge of the events industry,’ she says.
‘I’ll be working closely with the WorldsSkills project team and supporting the Production Assistant to provide on-site support for both rehearsals and the big events.’

Grass Roots Group Operations Manager, Samantha Smith says the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for WorldSkills London 2011 represent a great opportunity for young people who are starting out in events, as there is potential to become involved in every aspect of organising and delivering a unique live experience at the O2 Arena.

‘Emma and Sasha will become involved right from the beginning of the delivery phase of the project, partnering with key members of our logistics and production teams to undertake a variety of practical tasks which are a true representation of life in a busy events agency environment,’ she says.

‘In building and managing good working partnerships with Grass Roots staff, suppliers and contractors during the project, they’ll not only help us deliver the best WorldSkills ceremonies yet, they’ll also acquire the practical knowledge and grounding that will equip them for a successful career in live events.’
